1. "He was one hundred and seventy days dying and not yet dead." This is an amazing quote! I think it would be weird to know that you started to die, but haven't fully died yet. I know that I am going to die at some time, but I'm not in the process yet. -Bryant Sell

-Bryant, i completly agree with you. This quote gives an icredible feel for the overall low morality of EVERYTHING. Instead of how many days/ years hes been alive, its dead. Dead like the rest of the world...- Alex Campbell

2."I have to be so careful, Sgt. Logan. You see, no one likes to know what another person really thinks about him. We imagine that we dom but we don't. This telesending of mine makes me loathed. 3. "Gully Foyle is my name and Terra is my nation. Deep space is my dwelling place and death's my destination," Chapter 1, pg. 16. This is the first real mention of Gully Foyle and what he is all about. This gives the reader a little insight on him. It is a little fuzzy, though. It gives the reader insight into Gully Foyle, without saying it bluntly. This quotation sets the tone for the novel. -Nicole Crossman

4. pg 54-55. "With all courtesy I shave your ill-formed eyebrows," Y'ang-Yeovil said. "Most respectfully I singe your snaggle teeth." I think this shows that there isn't much racisim in their time like there is in the world today because they joke and laugh about a "blood feud" that went on for 3 thousand years between them. or maybe it meant something else, but thats what i got from it. -Justin Campbell

5.pg 40. "So you've been malingering. You knew how to jaunte. You've been jaunting all the while you've been pretending to learn in the primer class... taking big jumps around the country; around the world for all i know." 6. p.22 "So, in five seconds, he was born, he lived, and he died" it shows the fight in Gully, on pg 15. it says he fought for survival witht he passion of a beast in a trap. it jst reasserts what was said perviously and is obviously true. -*Aaron Gromiller*

7. pg 25 "Who are you?"
"Where are you from?"
"Where are you now?"

9. pg.41 "Get out you filthy, hideous...thing. Get out!" " You dont like my face, Miss Robin? There aint nothing you can do about that either." I think these to quotes from the book are funny because Gully didnt have a choice in what happened to his face the Scientific people just did it to him when he became unconscious.- Chanelle Meadows

10. pg. 17
"Who are you?" "Gully Foyle is my name."
"Where are you from?" "Terra is my nation."
"Where are you now?" "Deep space is my dwelling place."
"Where are you bound?" "Death's my destination."
I agree with Catherine. He does repeat this quote a few times and it does make him seem like hes not an ordinary person. It tells a little bit about him like his name, where he's from, where he is now, and where he will be. I personally like this quotes because its a little poem about him. - Sasha Cochran

11.pg 57 "No? i cite the fission bomb of 1945. I cite the Null-G anti-gravity installations of 2022. Talley's All-Field Radar Trip Screen of 2192. Materials can often make the difference, especially when there's the chance of the enemy getting it first." i like these quotes because for one, it talks about the anti-gravity installations of 2022 and that makes me think about how close that really is. Could our technology be that advanced that soon? I also like the quote in here that says about the enemy getting it first. i like this because this proves that no matter what time you are in this quote can apply to you. You always have to protect what you got because it is only good untill the enemy gets it.- Alyssa Gallagher-

12. pg68 "We don't punish criminals in our enlightened age, we cure 'em and the cure is worse than the punishment." This quote souns harsh. I like this because it sounds so pwerful. I feel that if we would "cure" our criminals then we would avoid alot of our problems we have today. -Alyssa Gallagher-

13. pg 61" Fears, guilt, terrors and shame could be interchanged from one man to the next and none would notice the difference." I like this quote because this shows that even in the future we will still be struggling with things like fear and guilt. It shows that everyone has the same struggles, and no matter how well you try to hide it we all deal with them. -Alyssa Gallagher-

14. pg 78 "Your repartee's improved; your speech, too. You've changed," Dagenham said. This shows that Foyle can change for the better. That he can get smarter if he just tries, and for him being in that prison didnt do him any harm, but it helped him in more ways then one.- Erica Keim

15. pg. 104 "No. Foyle has to be seen to be believed. However, it doesn't matter. He'll lead us out to Nomad. He'll lead us to your bullion and PyrE, Presteign. I'm almost sorry it's all over. Or nearly. As I said, I've been enjoying myself. He really is unique." When I read this, I get the feeling that Dagenham has respect for him. Then if he would have respect for him, maybe he would lay off on going after him. He has given Foyle ways to lead them to the Nomad. Foyle has gotten to it but he doesn't want to make a deal where in the first place he did. I have to agree with Dagenham- He really is unique, or at least the author is.- Nick Kratzer

16) pg. 103 "Ghoul!" She began to laugh. "Liar...Lecher...Tiger...Ghoul. The walking cancer ...Gully Foyle." This quote shows that Gully is really only after revenge and he is full of ange. Jiz says this to him because of what he did to Sam.- Catherine Averill

if you read the text it may not sound like he has a plan but if you read between the lines he sort of does.-Chanelle Meadows

18.) pg. 143 "How Interesting. You've given up rape?" I definitely think Robin is brave. I understand that Gully has somewhat gotten civilized but I would NOT bring back to his attention what he did. I think she's brave for even working alongside him. If I was her and I seen him kill somebody, I'd be gone. -Nick Kratzer

19. pg 135 "charm can't be learned," Robin wednesbury. this quote is memorable for two reasons. the first being that i just fully agree with this quote. I think charm is part of a person's personality and once someone has a distinct personality such as gully'f selfish one, they have trouble changing that. It is also important because it is brought up agian when Foyle is on the patio with olivia prestiegn and she makes the comment, "ah, you see yourself as a knight in armor? Chivalry to the rescue. It doesn't suit you, my dear. You haven't the flair for it. You'd best go." It seems as though olivia is telling him that he doesnt have the right attitude/personality to be chivalrous and should therefore abandon the attempt, or he cannot "learn" to be chivalrous and charming.~nicole dengler

20. pg.133 "What? Who? Fourmoyle of -? Yes, of course. The buffoon. The bourgeois gentilhomme. Vulgarity. Imbecility. Obscenity. The Four Mile Circus..." 22. Pg. 215 "It will be a shooting war to end all wars if we can't stop it." I think the interesting part of this quote is the idea that it is the "war to end all wars." World War I was also known as the war to end all wars. it is interesting that alfred bester is bringing to the attention of the reader that throughout every war the people involved in the war are going to believe that the war is what is best for man-kind and that it will bring an end to any future wars to come. ~nicole dengler

23. Pg. 224 "I'm telling you why. The raider got a clever idea. They'd turn you into a devcoy...a sitting duck, uderstand? You were half dead, but they took you aboard and and patched you up. They put you into a spacesuit and cast you adrift with your micro-wave on. You were broadcasting distress signals and mumbling for help on every wave band. The idea was, they'd lurk nearby and pick off the IP ships that came to rescue you." I think that this really expains a ton that happened in the beginning of the book that i didnt understand before. Also I think this will add to Gully's anger, but am not quite sure. The O.S. had all of this planned from the beginning just so they could get their hands on Pyre, but no one really knew.-Chanelle Meadows

ch. 16. pg 256. "it isn't necessary to have something to believe in. It's only necessary to believe that somewhere there's something worthy of belief" i think this really sums up the general meaning of the book. it wasnt necassary for Gully to believe he was gonna get revenge and destroy everything/one. but it was necessary for him to believe that it could be done, and he believed it so it was worthy of thought. -*Aaron Gromiller*

“Then find it for yourself, sir. Don’t ask the world to stop moving because you have doubts.” This is really cool because the robot is answering Gully's question, it is telling the whole room what no one seems to be able to figure out on their own. - Christian Graham

p. 251- "Who leads?", "The men who must... driven men, compelled men", "Freak men", " Youre all freaks, sir. But youve always been freaks. Life is a freak. Thats its hope and glory". That was awesome how the robot told the PEOPLE kinda the meaning of life and how it works. And the Robot is right, we all are freaks in our own way. It seemed like the non thinking robot, was the smartest object on the whole planet. Andreas Natoli
